Sustainable Energy in 5 Settlements of Kotayk Region

Solar PV System Water Heaters

As part of the UNDP “Sustainable Communities” Solar24 project, 10KW solar panels and 50 LED streetlights were installed in the Kaghsi and Lernanist communities of Hrazdan, Arzakan and Bjni communities of Charentsavan, and the Meghradzor community of Tsaghkadzor in Kotayk region. The 10KW solar panels and LED lamps will enable these communities to significantly reduce their electricity costs.

Overall, approximately 7.5 kilometers of roads were illuminated across all five communities in Kotayk region, leading to an expected reduction in electricity consumption by 12,000 kilowatt-hours per year.

“This project significantly reduces the energy costs for these communities while providing a safer and more comfortable environment for residents. The solar panels and LED lighting not only help save money but also contribute to a more sustainable and environmentally friendly future. The satisfaction of the residents is the best testament to the necessity and effectiveness of the project,” says Susanna Safaryan, UNDP “Sustainable Communities” programme expert.

“The residents are very pleased, and the benefits are clear and visible to everyone. The previous lighting system was outdated and incomplete, but now, with the support of UNDP, the main road in Bjni is fully lit,” says Hovhannes Andreasyan, the administrative head of the Bjni community.

The Solar24 program is also being implemented this year in the Ararat, Armavir, Aragatsotn, and Kotayk regions. The project operates on an 80/20 co-financing model, where UNDP contributes 80% of the total cost, and the remaining 20% is provided by the community.
