Expanding the Reach of Sustainable Income Projects: “Honey-Money” and “Greenhouse” Programs Seek New Beneficiaries

Greenhouse Honey-Money

The “Honey-Money” and “Greenhouse” initiatives, part of the “Sustainable Communities” program, are now seeking new beneficiaries. The “Honey-Money” project, which aims to enhance the skills and resources of rural beekeepers, is extending its reach to the Ararat, Armavir, and Vayots Dzor marzes. Additionally, UNDP’s “Greenhouse” project is also on the lookout for new participants.

The “Honey-Money” project is broadening its scope to include displaced individuals from Artsakh who have established permanent residence in the targeted communities. To date, 1,300 beehives have been distributed to 430 beneficiaries across 62 settlements over two years. The successful outcomes prompted this expansion, as highlighted by Lusine Balayan, an expert with the “Sustainable Communities” program.

“The program aims to bolster beekeeping farms by enhancing their capabilities and infrastructure. Over the past two years, we provided 1,300 beehives and, after assessing the results in 2023, we found significant improvements,” Balayan stated. The continued success of the program has led to an expansion in both the number of beneficiaries and the range of support provided, including those who have previously demonstrated successful outcomes.

Support will be extended based on a co-financing principle, with UNDP providing necessary equipment and upgrading production areas in compliance with the “Law on Beekeeping of RA” and relevant production standards. Interested applicants must complete the application available on the program’s website. Following a preliminary selection, successful candidates will attend a two-day course. Those who complete the course and pass the exam will receive two beehives, with a total of 250 beehives planned for distribution, according to Arman Valesyan, head of the UNDP “Sustainable Communities” project.

The “Greenhouse” project, having successfully implemented its initiative in the Goris community of Syunik region in 2023, is also seeking new beneficiaries. Seven families have already been equipped with 150 square meter greenhouses, and three more are in the process of installation, reported Mkhitar Balayan, an expert with the project.

“The greenhouses are fully equipped and operational, providing income for beneficiary families. The initial results have been promising, with families successfully growing and selling greens. As we move into the new season in April, we will provide vegetable seedlings such as tomatoes, cucumbers, sweet potatoes, and beans,” Balayan added.

The support program will extend to additional communities in Syunik marz, and new beneficiaries will be sought from the border settlements of Gegharkunik and Vayots Dzor marzes. Displaced persons residing in these areas are also eligible to apply.

“We aim to educate at least 25 families and provide a minimum of 16 greenhouses. Necessary seedlings and auxiliary equipment will be provided,” noted Arman Valesyan. The program’s cluster approach aims to foster self-sufficiency within communities, ensuring sustainable development and income opportunities.

Applications for the “Honey-Money” program are now available on the “Sustainable Communities” program website. The “Greenhouse” program application will be accessible in the coming days.

These initiatives are set to provide new opportunities for individuals and communities, fostering sustainable income sources and promoting self-sufficiency. For more information and to apply, visit the “Sustainable Communities” program website.
