Aghnjadzor Beekeepers Turn to Electric Fencing for Protection

Within the framework of the “Sweet Village” initiative of the UNDP “Sustainable Communities” programme launched in Aghnjadzor, 6 out of the 9 selected beneficiaries who chose to develop large-scale or expanding beekeeping farms have received electric fences.

Installing electric fences around beehives is the most effective way to protect them from wild animals, as it creates an artificial barrier that prevents wildlife from entering and damaging the hives. The electric fence repels animals with a mild electric shock without causing harm. Installing high-quality electric fencing is one of the key steps in establishing exemplary beekeeping farms, as it protects the apiaries and significantly reduces the likelihood of encounters between people and wild animals.

As part of the “Sweet Village” project, a practical training was organized in Aghnjadzor for the beneficiaries, during which the technical requirements and nuances of installing and operating electric fences were presented. In line with the project’s standards, warning signs will be placed throughout the perimeter of the electric fence to alert people.

All 9 beneficiaries of the “Sweet Village” project have already received a total of 105 polyurethane hives, 9 sets of accessories (including a water container, board, and logbook), and construction materials for hive improvement (including 355 liters of paint, 25 kg of liquid putty, and 30 liters of glue). The beneficiaries have installed bee colonies and are carrying out cleaning and improvement works on their existing hives, beekeeping sites, equipment, and storage areas.

“All 9 beneficiaries enthusiastically participated in the training on installation and operation of electric fences. They emphasized that having a quality, solar-powered electric fence equipped with a lightning arrester is a great necessity for their farms,” said Lusine Balayan, an expert from the UNDP “Sustainable Communities” programme.

The “Sweet Village” initiative is a co-financing model aimed at fostering the socio-economic resilience of the community by creating new jobs, promoting the production and marketing of bee products, and enhancing the village’s tourism potential.
